FES Subsea order for hot stabs for Nord Stream 2 pipeline31st October 2018
Following the successful delivery of hot stabs for Nord Stream 1, Nord Stream AG has ordered a number of new bespoke hot stabs for the Nord Stream 2 pipeline from FES Subsea, a global provider of subsea pipeline equipment.
A team of European engineers has been working on this project, which has seen FES significantly re-engineer its hot stab for the project following detailed collaborative working with the team at Nord Stream AG. This bespoke work has ensured that the 8 in. hydraulically operated hot stabs are compatible with the existing pipeline. The design changes have been so successful that FES will now manufacture all 8 in. hydraulically operated hot stabs in this way.
FES hot stabs provide fluid coupling and flushing preventing debris from passing through the pipeline and are currently the only products of their kind in production.
Rob Frater, Design and Project Engineer at FES, said, “Our 8 in. hydraulically operated hot stabs are the largest items we offer and therefore they present unique challenges in terms of the scale of the components. Because of our successful work on Nord Stream 1, the team was asked to engineer the new hot stabs to ensure their interchangeability with the existing pipeline.”
Nord Stream AG provided a technical specification for the new project that included required operating temperatures, operating pressures, design life and hydraulic activation pressures. The hot stabs have been delivered to the project with an installation date to be confirmed.
The Nord Stream 2 pipeline runs through the Baltic Sea from St Petersburg in Russia to Lubmin in Germany. The pipeline will be installed at a maximum depth of 200 m and will run for approximately 1223 km when completed. Nord Stream AG is owned by Public Joint Stock Company Gazprom, the largest supplier of natural gas in the world, accounting for approximately 15% of world gas production.
A hot stab is a high-pressure subsea connector used to link into mud systems for intervention or emergency operations on offshore sites. Suitable for use with subsea pigging, chemical or gas injections including floor and vent operations, the connector can be used on new and retrofit offshore rigs enabling an alternative entry point into a mud system.
